Story of the film
On her 40th birthday, Sarah, a successful London-based model and influencer originally from Africa, loses her career, sponsorships, and income overnight after becoming “too old” for the fashion industry. With nowhere else to turn, she returns with her lovable but hopelessly unproductive British/American boyfriend, Tom, to her grandmother’s village on Kenya’s Diani Beach.
Hoping to reinvent herself as a lifestyle influencer, Sarah faces endless chaos caused by family, villagers, and traditional life until she begins filming a cooking show in her grandmother’s restaurant. The outspoken, foul-mouthed, and brutally honest Grandma quickly becomes a social media sensation as her cooking and fearless political commentary captivate the nation, leading to an unexpected presidential campaign run by her grandchildren and Tom.
Set against the stunning landscapes and rich culture of coastal Kenya, the film is a heartwarming comedy that celebrates family, diversity, friendship between people from around the world, and the power of an extraordinary grandmother who inspires not just an entire country, but the whole world.
Our Goal
Beyond being a comedy film, Grandma for President is also a meaningful social impact project created to support talented young people living in the Kakuma Refugee Camp.
Many of these young people are passionate about storytelling, filmmaking, acting and creative arts, but are trapped in extremely difficult circumstances with very limited opportunities to build a future.
